A Small Turn of the Wheel
As the New Year rolls in, many of us feel that familiar urge to change our lives.
New year. New rules. New version of me.
And often… we go big.
Really big.
Yoga Therapy teaches something beautiful about this:
when we move to one extreme, the energy of the opposite is already gathering, waiting to swing us back.
I’ve lived this one personally.
For years, I’d choose a resolution—get in shape, eat perfectly, overhaul my life. I’d go 100%. Sometimes I’d last 30 days (if I was lucky)… and then I’d swing right back to my old patterns.
Sometimes even worse than before.
But the hardest part wasn’t the behavior.
It was the guilt and shame that followed—
that quiet voice saying, “Why can’t you just make this stick?”
That’s why these days, I don’t work with resolutions.
I work with intentions and small, sustainable changes.
This year, for example, I intend to eat a little more cleanly.
I intend to move my body more regularly—in ways that actually support me.
In Yoga Therapy, we respect momentum.
Small changes may seem insignificant, but they’re the ones that last.
And over time, they completely change the direction of our lives.
Think of a massive ocean-going ship.
It can’t—and shouldn’t—make a sharp turn.
There’s too much weight. Too much motion. Too much history moving forward.
But with a small, steady turn of the wheel…
that ship will end up in a completely different ocean.
That’s how real change works.
Yes, it requires discipline—but not the kind that breaks us.
The kind that walks with us over time.
So here’s a gentle invitation:
If you have resolutions this year, what would they look like if you scaled them way back?
What if you made one small change each month—
then supported it… stabilized it… and only then added the next?
And as you do, lead with compassion and grace.
There will be slips. There will be slides.
But it’s much easier to get back on a short horse
than to fall off a very, very tall one.
So here’s today’s simple question:
What course are you plotting?
With love, steadiness, and a hand on the wheel,
Danny
