From the Mind of Danny White
“There’s a Breath for That”
Hey Pat, I Got It Down
We've all heard the phrase, "I've got it down pat."
I wanted to research that a little bit, but before I even jumped on a computer—before I let someone else tell me what it meant—I wanted to drop some notes on what I thought it meant.
I think the first time I came across that statement was when I was seriously involved in playing the drums.
What Doesn’t Diminish
Watching my father age, sometimes with grace and sometimes with challenge, has been an education I never expected to receive.
The truth is, watching someone we love grow older can be difficult.
Not only because we see their life changing, but because somewhere deep inside we are reminded that someday ours will too.
And I think that fear can cause us to look away.
The Unknown
I've been reflecting on my life these past few months and noticing just how little is actually predictable.
Sometimes that realization feels exhilarating.
Other times it can be downright frightening.
For nearly three decades, my career has been built around living in the unknown. Every morning I wake up not knowing what computer crisis, server failure, or emergency I'll be stepping into.
The Understudy
I was always fascinated by the old Hollywood stories.
The legend goes that Lana Turner was discovered sitting in a malt shop and by the next day she was a star. One moment anonymous. The next moment center stage.
But another theater tradition captured my imagination even more: the understudy.
Expanding Our Grip
As a kid, I was fascinated with juggling.
There were so many different things you could juggle. Balls, clubs, knives, even fire—which, of course, was my favorite. But what really captured my imagination was trying to juggle things that weren't the same.
Rubber balls and eggs for example.
One would bounce if I dropped it.
The other...well...Mom would not be very happy with me.
And she wasn't - but she indulged her boy that was always exploring the limits of what he could do.
Walk a Mile in My Shoes, My Sole Brother
There's an old saying: Walk a mile in my shoes.
And I think there's a lot of soul in that statement. Get it?
Recently, I've had to recognize that many of my attempts to understand a situation have been through the lens of my own experience rather than through the lens of the person I'm trying to understand.
Most of us want our feelings validated.
We want our experiences acknowledged.
We want to be seen.
But sometimes the invitation is to step outside of our own experience and place our feet firmly in the shoes of another.
Nature, Red in Tooth and Claw
People often tell me:
"Danny... when they made you, they broke the mold."
Well, I’m here to tell you... they didn’t break the mold.
Apparently they used it again.
I love my brother Tom. He’s twelve years younger than me, and I’ve known him for about sixteen years.
Now some of you may be doing the math right now with raised eyebrows thinking:
"Wait... what’s the story there???"
Cheep Cheep
A Duck-Tale
The other morning Sarah and I got up, made our coffee, and looked out the window toward the backyard.
There, floating in our pool, was a little duck family.
How cute.
There was the handsome-looking mallard duck with his deep shades of green. You all know I’m a little partial to the animal kingdom. A peacock with all its colors and plumes, a mallard with its beautiful shades of green...
Why can’t I wear clothes like that?
I’m Only Human
Making mistakes is human.
Give me a break… give me a break.
And instead of breaking off a piece of that Kit Kat bar, maybe we break off a piece of compassion for ourselves when we make mistakes.
Perhaps we realize that sometimes the only way to learn something more deeply… is to trip, stumble, and fall.
MIrror MIrror
Mirror neurons are the body’s quiet way of saying:
“I recognize you.”
They fire when we act.
They fire when we witness another person acting.
They help us learn, empathize, and feel the invisible thread between nervous systems.
The Happiest Place on Earth
4 a.m. alarm.
On the road by five.
Motel by seven.
(And side note: chanting the Hanuman Chalisa with your innkeeper may or may not get you free parking.... Guess what happened for us?!)
Security cleared by 7:40.
Ready for rope drop.
It’s a Condition, Not an Excuse
It’s a Condition, Not an Excuse
I was reading a novel recently.
I love fiction.
A really good author doesn’t just tell a story—they teach you something about life without you even realizing it.
One of my favorite authors actually started as a child psychologist.
I’ve been reading his books since the ’80s, and woven into the stories are these subtle, powerful insights into human behavior.
It’s like therapy… disguised as entertainment.
These Are Not My Beautiful Jeans
There’s something that starts to happen as we get older… we begin to rely on a little help to see clearly. Glasses. And I’m officially in that club now. Not just for reading words—but for seeing things up close… objects, details… reality itself, apparently.
Overnight Oats
I don’t eat breakfast much,
but this concept of Overnight Oats sounds interesting to me.
Do a little preparation,
throw it in the refrigerator…
and in the morning,
you’ve got a nice, healthy breakfast ready for you.
The Closer I Get To You
I recently was on a road trip. I love road trips… but I have to be very cautious with how my body responds to them.
Unfortunately, the day I left, I picked up a bug.
Not the kind that sits on your windshield looking in asking for a ride to California… a real one. Nose, chest—the whole deal.
So I asked myself: What would Arun do?
I channeled my Jedi master.
How Come I Don't Have a Pet Pig?
We all have pet peeves.
I remember the first time I heard my parents say that as a kid…
but what I heard was pet pigs.
And I remember thinking,
“How come I don’t have one?”
Tapas Anyone?
Does Your View Follow You Into Every Avenue of Your Life?
I’ve been contemplating something lately that I’ve had a hard time putting clearly into words, but I’m going to attempt it today.
It’s the idea that our philosophy — our view of life — must eventually permeate every avenue of our life.
Who Are Your Reflectors?
We all need people who champion us.
The ones who stand beside us, who believe in us, who remind us of who we are when we forget. Those people are immeasurably important — and I’m grateful for them every day.
But today I want to plant a different seed.
Who are the people who truly reflect you?
I am Like You
“I am like you.
I am different from you.
I am nothing but you.”
This is one of my favorite sayings from the tradition of one of my teachers.
Immutability
What an interesting word.
It’s one I’ve found myself using lately — both in yoga and in my work as an IT engineer.
For over 30 years I’ve watched technology evolve. Systems change. Hardware changes. Threats change.
Two weeks ago, one of my clients was hit with ransomware — one of the worst things that can happen to a business at a digital level.
But here’s the thing:
If your business identity is stored in an immutable location — untouched, unchangeable — you’re golden.
