The Slow Hand
Over the last month or so, I have found myself in a real state of agitation and uncertainty.
This is normal. We all go through it.
I’ve been paying attention to how my mind and body are responding to the challenges and stresses that life is showing me right now.
And I’ve noticed a tendency to rush and neglect.
Those are two interesting places to see—and to be.
Recently, I was talking with my dear friend Arun. As he often does, he threw me a curveball when I was expecting a fastball.
He said, “Danny, just go back and read some of the words you’ve written.”
So that is what I’m doing this week.
And there is an invitation here for you, too. If you would like to revisit some of my older writings—or discover something you may have missed—you can find all of the blogs here:
His advice reminded me of a phrase I heard a long time ago:
Doctor, heal thyself.
To me, this means that we are often our own best teachers—and that even the very best teachers eventually point us back toward ourselves.
So this week, I am slowing down.
Pausing.
Looking a little more deeply inward.
Recently, I’ve been enjoying working through different exercises on the drums. I even found some old instruction books that I first worked from in the 1980s.
As I began playing through them again, I noticed my tendency to rush—to push through each exercise so I could reach the end of the book.
Then I stopped and asked myself:
Why?
What is waiting at the end that cannot be revealed right now?
